SCCS Offering New Enrichment Classes II - 最新增文化课及教师简介

Dear SCCS Members,

We are thrilled to announce that our school will offer a few more high quality enrichment classes this year, thanks to the enthusiastic support and participation of our parents:

  1. Youth Public Speaking Class 1&2 (Grade 4-8)

    • Course Description:
      This class is designed to prepare young students to become a good communicator and leader. It will teach the basic principles of public speaking, using vocal techniques, theater exercises, and games to help students overcome nervousness and build physical as well as vocal confidence. Through interactive class practice, students will learn how to organize and present ideas logically and convincingly.
    • Instructor: Dr. Heather Wainwright 
      Dr. Wainwright is a new member of the SCCS community. She has many years of experiences teaching subjects on philosophy, critical thinking, research and expository writing at both college and k-12 level. She holds a B.A. in English and Philosophy from Boston College, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from University of Minnesota.
    • Time/Location: 1:20-2:05 P.M. (Class 1)/2:15-3:00 (Class 2) /Room: B218
    • Tuition: $100/semester
  2. AP Calculus Preparation

    • Course Description:
      The AP Calculus Prep class will cover the materials in AP Calculus BC test, which includes all topics covered in AP Calculus AB plus additional topics. The class will also familiarize students with the structure of the exam, and test-taking techniques. This class is designed for junior or senior students in high school. 美国多数大学接受AP考试成绩作为大学学分。AP Calculus 包括AB和BC两种程度的考试。其中的BC考试范围更广。AP Calculus 备考课程将涵盖所有AP Calculus BC 的考试内容。授课重点将放在模拟练习和疑难解答上。欢迎上过pre-cal的同学来报名。
    • Instructor: Dr. George He/何见春博士
      Dr. He is a dedicated SCCS parent. He is currently a research scientist at Yale University. Before coming to the U.S. to pursue his Ph.D., Dr. He was a faculty member at the elite University of Science and Technology of China (中国科学技术大学). Dr. He has tutored high school and college students on AP Calculus, AP Physics, and SAT Mathematics. Dr. He is passionate about teaching and serving the community. He holds a B.S. and a M.S. in ECE from the University of Science and Technology of China; a Ph.D. in ECE from the University of Iowa.
    • Time/Location: 1:20-2:05 P.M. /Room C020
    • Tuition: $100/semester
  3. Chinese Recitation and Speech (Grade 2 and up) / 中文朗诵与演讲班

    • Course Description:
      This class will teach student to use professional Chinese language performance training methods. Through learning basic Mandarin pronunciation theories, the students will gradually grasp pronunciation skills, such as tone, intonation, stress change speed, etc. Moreover, it will guide students in reading, speech practice (e.g. analysis of the text content, cosplay, physical training, expression, gesture, etc.).
      中文朗诵与演讲班尝试采用部分专业语言表演训练的方法,使学生初步学习语言发音理论,逐步学习发音技巧(用气,吐字发声),字、句、短文分析(语气,语速,语调,重音变位等)。指导学生朗诵、演讲实践(分析文字内容,角色扮演,形体训练,表情、手势表演等).
    • Instructor: Mr. Xiaoan Zhang/张小安先生
      Mr. Zhang is a SCCS parent and current teacher. While teaching Art classes at our school over the past ten years, Mr. Zhang, a former professional broadcaster and actor, would also like to share his passion and expertise on Chinese recitation and speech.
    • Time/Location: 4:05-4:50 P.M./Room: C115
    • Tuition: $80/semester
  4. Intermediate/Advanced Drawing Class

    • Course Description:
      Intermediate/Advanced Drawing is designed for anyone who wishes to become a seasoned sketch-artist. Students will be required to improve their understanding of shapes and shadows through technically challenging assignments. While working with tools as simple and fundamental as a pencil, students will be challenged with three-dimensional concepts, as well as projects concerning shading and texture.

    • Time/Location: 1:20-2:05 P.M./Room: B210
    • Tuition: $80/semester

      (Meanwhile, Ms. Tu will be also teaching Art I Section 2 from 3:10-3:55 P.M. at C132.)

In addition to the above new courses, this year our school is also able to recruit a number of highly qualified teachers, including:

  • Grandmaster Aiping Cheng/程爱萍大师, Instructor of Tai Chi class

    Grandmaster Cheng is a world renowned Tai Chi and Kung Fu master. Throughout her long and prominent career, she has earned numerous awards including national championships in Tai Chi and Wu Shu. As a member of Chinese National Martial Arts Delegation, she was awarded the Presidential Gold Medal by President Richard Nixon at the White House in 1974. Since she came to the United States in 1997, Grandmaster Cheng has devoted to teaching martial arts among youth and adults, her martial arts school has trained over one thousand students during the past ten years. She was listed in “World Top 100 Martial Arts Masters” in 2008. More details on her background and accomplishments can be found on her website: www.aiping-taichi.com

  • Dr. Bernd Kaiser, Instructor of Chess I & II classes

    Dr. Kaiser currently works at a biotechnology company in Connecticut. He obtained his Ph.D. at the Westfaelische Wilhelms Universitaet in Muenster, Germany. After coming to the U.S. for a post-doctoral appointment at MIT, he has been working in the pharmaceutical industry field since. Dr. Kaiser was a chess teacher at CCSU Chinese School in West Hartford for 2 years before joining here at SCCS Chinese School. He will be teaching chess I/II this year.

  • Mr Markus Boesl, Instructor of SAT Preparation

    Mr. Markus Boesl graduated from Yale University with a degree in Philosophy. He plans to attend medical school next year in order to pursue his dream of being a doctor. In addition to his interests in science and philosophy, Markus is also an avid musician, piano teacher, runner and ultimate frisbee player.

  • Ms. Nicole Wooten, Instructor of Creative Writing 2/Reading and Writing

    Ms. Wooten is a graduate student at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. She is originally from North Carolina, but became familiar with many other homes while serving as an Environmental Education volunteer in the Peace Corps in El Salvador and working with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy from Maine to Georgia. She holds B.A.s in both English and Environmental Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
